‘Diets’ don’t work – try this instead
My clients all know that I am a nutritionist who hates diets. Here’s why:
Any diet with a name is not for YOU. If you’ve struggled with trying everything out there with no luck it’s because these diets only work for a small portion of the population. Out of the box and cookie cutter ‘diets’ are SOOOO last decade. The way to finally get what you are after is to customize. The added bonus is that when we customize, we allow ourselves to build something that we actually enjoy and that feels good. Customization is key. The most powerful gift you can give yourself in your health journey is the ability to hear your body’s signals, and create your own system to serve your body’s needs.
Diets are temporary, with no longevity which means the results (if you have any) will also be temporary.
Diets focus on what we can’t do, while making us miserable. Creating a customized plan that fits with our unique goals, lifestyles and preferences focuses on making “upgrades” in our health and wellness routine that feel like a reward in our day and breath of fresh air. These habits and tools become things that we love and crave, which set us up for true (and lasting) transformation.
By choosing a fad diet, you are missing the opportunity to upgrade your life and find routines and foods that feed your body, heart and mind.
By choosing a fad diet, you are tuned in to rules instead of listening to your own unique body.
If you are new to customization:
Consider starting with a framework of a diet that is attractive to you and modifying it to be the “insert your name here” diet
Maybe you start paleo, but you do fine with rice?
Maybe you lean vegetarian but eat meat once in a while?
Give yourself permission to play and identify things that feel good and things that don’t serve you and your goals.
Don’t name it. Feel it.
One final note: The only caveat to this is a therapeutic protocol with medical partnership, which can be a very powerful and transformative therapy (think SCD, AIP, anti-inflammatory, etc). Food is medicine, people! Powerful, powerful stuff.
If you’d like a partner in either a therapeutic protocol or learning more about how to create your own custom health plan, we are here to help!
